Obstetrics/Gynecology 4th Year Medical Student Electives

Maternal-Fetal Medicine: (MFM)
a four- week elective in Asheville, NC.
Medical students on this rotation will experience the full breadth of Maternal-Fetal
Medicine practiced in western North Carolina. Student responsibilities will include
managing inpatient antepartum patients and patients on labor and delivery, and
participation various clinics including the high risk obstetrics, the MFM outreach, and
the prenatal diagnosis clinics. Student will also spend time with various professionals
in the prenatal diagnosis clinic, such as maternal-fetal medicine specialists, diagnostic
ultra-sonographers, and genetic counselors. They will also participate in the monthly
multidisciplinary fetal board conference and take overnight call with the obstetrical team.
Ambulatory Care OB/GYN: (AOB)
a four-week outpatient elective in Asheville, NC.
During this rotation students will spend most of the time working with the MAHEC OB/GYN
faculty and residents in various specialty clinics including the following: obstetrics, high risk
obstetrics, gynecology, GYN procedures (Colposcopy/LEEP), reproductive endocrinology, breast,
asthma, teen obstetrics and behavior medicine clinics. Call is optional.
Gynecologic Oncology: (GO)
a four-week surgical elective in Asheville, NC.
Student responsibilities during this elective will include rounding with the oncology team
in the mornings and afternoons on hospital patients, assisting on GYN-ONC patient surgeries,
clinic time with Oncology attendings, lectures with oncology team regarding specific topics,
morning conferences (tumor board. Call is taken one night a week with residents on service.
