Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program

lawrence photoDirector's Message

The faculty of the MAHEC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology are proud of the educational opportunities being afforded to our residents. They have the opportunity to experience their training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in a community setting facilitated not only by MAHEC faculty, but by many of our highly qualified OB/GYN private practitioners. Rotations with other medical specialists, ER physicians, Radiologists, Anesthesiologists, Neonatologists, Pulmonologists, Critical Care Specialists, Pathologists, and Family and Internal Medicine Physicians ensure a well rounded training program.

The MAHEC Department’s strong linkage with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill underlines our commitment to quality education. The visits by UNC-CH faculty to the MAHEC Program complement the residents’ experiences in Asheville.

The MAHEC OB/GYN Residency Program collaborates with the MAHEC Family Practice Residency Program and other trainees through the Mountain Area Health Education Center. These interactions, along with day-to-day consultations with medical and surgical practicing subspecialists in the Asheville community, demonstrate for the residents the importance of inter-specialty cooperation in the delivery of high quality healthcare.

The role of the Obstetrician/Gynecologist as a provider of primary, preventive healthcare services to women is stressed in this program. The primary care education completes the training experience for the Obstetrician/Gynecologist. The graduates of the MAHEC OB/GYN Residency Program should be able to integrate easily into the healthcare delivery systems of both today and the future.

The faculty and I are pleased with your interest in the MAHEC OB/GYN Residency Program.

Sincerely,
Allen Van Dyke, MD, FACOG
Interim Director, Division of OB/GYN
