the MAHEC Ob/Gyn Residency Program
Patient Care • Education • Research
The Mountain Area Health Education Center is a center of excellence for improving health in Western North Carolina. Located in Asheville, MAHEC is one of the largest providers of healthcare in the community,
and also serves healthcare professionals, students, and institutions throughout a 16-county region in Western North Carolina. We are a member of the North Carolina AHEC system, one of the oldest and most extensive
AHEC systems in the country. Founded in 1975, MAHEC is one of nine AHECs in North Carolina which serve as a bridge between the state’s university health science centers and the region's health care delivery system.
By providing compassionate, quality healthcare to patients, and targeted, state of the art training to healthcare providers, MAHEC actively works to meet the high priority needs of the state.
MAHEC has become known throughout the region for providing quality patient care, and is a nationally known training site for healthcare providers.
Integrated, Academic, Community-focused
Residents at MAHEC have the opportunity to experience their Obstetrics and Gynecology training in a community setting
facilitated by a dedicated teaching group of MAHEC faculty. MAHEC faculty is chosen based on their desire to teach and
educate our next generation of obstetrician gynecologists. MAHEC has the unique position of a close academic relationship
with UNC as well as the breath of opportunities that the Asheville medical community has to offer. Residents work with
many highly qualified OB/GYN clinical faculty in private practice. Close collaboration with other medical specialists,
ER Physicians, Radiologists, Anesthesiologists, Neonatologists, Pulmonologists, Critical Care Specialists, Pathologists,
and Family and Internal Medicine Physicians ensure a well rounded training program.
Our affiliation with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill,
underlines our commitment to combining community based clinical experiences with rigorous academics. All faculty hold
clinical appointments with the University, and UNC faculty provide grand round lectures. MAHEC also offers extensive
research opportunities within a community based system, with experienced, dedicated staff to support resident research
in a clinical setting. The role of the Obstetrician/Gynecologist as a provider of both primary and preventive health
care services to women is stressed in this program. Graduates of the MAHEC OB/GYN Residency Program learn the full
spectrum of skills required in delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.
