MAHEC Family Health Center
The MAHEC Family Health Center is a dream realized. The center is a 20,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility for
the practice and teaching of family medicine. Located just north of town and adjacent to UNCA, the center is within
5-10 minutes of downtown and Mission Hospital.
The center houses 25 exam rooms, a well-equipped minor surgery room, precepting and video-monitoring rooms,
and behavioral and family counseling rooms. It also houses laboratory, x-ray and DEXA scan services, and procedure
and casting rooms. The faculty and administrative staff of the residency program reside on the upper level; this
includes conference rooms for meetings and didactics, and a spacious commons area.
The full-time family medicine faculty and residents care for a cross section of people Asheville and surrounding
Buncombe County. Currently, we handle over 30,000 patient visits per year.
MAHEC Family Health at Givens Estates
For more than 15 years MAHEC and Givens have worked together to provide healthcare to residents of Givens
Estates, an 800-resident Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), including a 56-unit assisted living
facility and an 84-bed skilled nursing facility with a dedicated Alzheimer's/Special Care Unit. Currently
these efforts include:
- Physician care for more than 50 of the residents at Givens Health Center
- Physician care for nearly 50 residents of Woods Assisted Living
- Medical direction for Givens Health Center and Woods Assisted Living and the Givens Estates Community
- On-site physician office visits at the Givens Clinic on the first floor of Asbury Commons for residents of Givens Estates who have chosen to be MAHEC patients
- Plans are underway for MAHEC to construct a full service primary care office on the southwest corner of the Givens Estates Campus. This will provide primary care services, dental services and GYN consultations for the residents of Givens and the nearby South Asheville community.
Deerfield Retirement Community
Deerfield Retirement Community is a 450-resident Life Care CCRC including an 84-bed combined Assisted
Living/Skilled care facility on 110 beautiful acres just south of the renowned Biltmore Estate. Red roofs,
stucco and stonework define the look of Deerfield, while tree-shaded lanes bordered with azaleas and
rhododendron meander through the walkable community. The design of Deerfield captures the arts and crafts
architectural style that characterizes Asheville, a small, friendly mountain city that offers the cultural,
recreational and educational opportunities of a much larger one.
A MAHEC physician and nurse practitioner staff the MAHEC clinic five half-days per week and provide the
full range of primary care practice with an emphasis on geriatric medicine: well care; sick visits; lab;
radiology referrals; other specialist referrals; coordination of care with specialists; after-hours on-call
coverage 24/7; hospital care at Mission Hospital. The MAHEC clinic is located at the entrance to the
Healthcare Center on the campus of Deerfield.
Life In Asheville
Asheville is a unique town nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina. With a population of
just over 70,000, it has a small-town feel but boasts big-town attractions. With its arts and live
music scene, along with a plethora of outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, skiing,
and whitewater rafting, Asheville offers something for everyone. For those who like to eat out or
hang out, Asheville features many fantastic local restaurants and now 9 local microbreweries serving
up some of the best beer in the nation. During the summer months, enjoy the Asheville Tourists minor
league baseball team or one of several outdoor music festivals including Bele Chere , Brewgrass,
and "Downtown After Five." In short, there is plenty to do when you have time off as a resident.
At an average elevation of 2,340 feet above sea level, Asheville enjoys four distinct seasons.
The average spring temperature is 62 degrees, and early April is when temperatures generally stop
falling below freezing. Summers are cool, with average high temperature of 82 degrees and average
low of 61 degrees. Fall brings brilliant foliage and an average temperature of 48 degrees.
Winter’s average temperature is 42 degrees. Snowfall is heavy in the higher elevations, but the
past 20-year average in Asheville is 12 inches per year.
The University of North Carolina has a branch in Asheville. Other nearby educational institutions
include Western Carolina University, Warren Wilson College, Mars Hill College, Montreat College, and
Brevard College. WCU and UNCA have expanding graduate programs.
