International Medical Graduates

Special laws and regulations apply to international medical graduates who wish to enter the United States to undertake graduate medical education. MAHEC's policies and procedures regarding graduates of international medical schools comply with federal and state laws and regulations and MAHEC's commitment to graduate medical education.

International Medical Graduates must have ECFMG certification, J-1 visa status documentation, and must be eligible for licensure in North Carolina (North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners requires for licensure that foreign medical graduates, or graduates of medical school not approved by the ACGME or the American Osteopathic Association, complete three years of post graduate training in the U.S. or Canada.) MAHEC also requires a high level of English language skills.

If you have any questions regarding the application process, or if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me at (828) 771-3412 or via email at gmrpinfo@mahec.net.

Finally, the North Carolina Medical Board requires that physicians who are graduates of schools that are not accredited by the LCME or the AOA (foreign medical schools) must be individually certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, have successfully completed at least three years of accredited graduate medical training, and have passed the USMLE or its equivalent to be eligible for application for full licensure. An international medical graduate must complete all other application requirements required by MAHEC and the GME program.

The experience I gained during my fellowship helps me on a daily basis. Having additional training in Geriatrics has opened new doors for me professionally and being a Geriatrician has been a very rewarding progression in my practice as a physician. I am grateful to the MAHEC staff for their support throughout this process.
