Welcome to the MAHEC Family Medicine Residency Program. MAHEC’s exceptional people, excellent program, and inspirational setting in Western North Carolina create an environment for residency training that is truly unique. The quality and diversity of our program is exemplified by our Family Health Center, our residents, faculty, and staff. Our sustained success is further indicated by the history of our program's performance in the Match and the retention rate of our graduates who stay in the region to care for our underserved communities.

Our curriculum is rigorous and challenging. We offer a balance of core experiences and numerous innovations clearly dedicated to healthcare for the underserved at home and abroad. Project Access, a community-based, volunteer physician outreach program, and Shoulder to Shoulder, a healthcare and community development project in rural Honduras, are two examples of our creative activities.

Mission Hospitals, our teaching hospital system, is a regional referral center that offers the highest quality of advanced health care and education in the atmosphere of a community hospital. This hybrid of a community hospital-tertiary care center is seamlessly complemented by our home base, the MAHEC Family Health Center. This beautiful facility supports a multitude of activities from patient care to resident didactics, from administrative to social events, all in a sunny and spacious environment.

And then there are the mountains. The quality of life in Western North Carolina is legendary. Our residents, faculty, and staff enjoy the wide array of opportunities to hike, bike, kayak, canoe, fish, compete, or just relax in the Blue Ridge. The thriving music, arts, crafts, and dance communities further enrich our lives.

I invite you to get to know our people. Our residents and faculty come from all over the country to train and settle here. There is a characteristic independence, intelligence, dedication to hard work, and joy that is readily apparent. We admire, enjoy, and support each other in an atmosphere that turns the challenges of residency training into a once-in-a-lifetime growth experience. Please read on for more information about our curriculum, affiliation with the University of North Carolina, residents, staff, salary and benefits, and community.

Blake Fagan PhotoI look forward to meeting you and sharing my thoughts as I embark on my seventh year at MAHEC. Best of luck in the exciting adventure of residency selection that lies ahead.
