General Practice Dental Residency Program
General Practice Dental Residency Program
The program accepted its first class of four residents in July 2007.
Two second year positions will be available beginning in 2008. A second year resident must
have successfully completed the one year program in the MAHEC GPR program.
The program in general practice residency is accredited by the Commission on Dental
Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation status of initial accreditation. The Commission
is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education.
The Commission on Dental Accreditation can be contacted at (312) 440-4653 or at 211 East
Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611.
The Commission on Dental Accreditation has accredited the postdoctoral program in
general practice residency. However, this education area is not one of the ADA recognized
dental specialty areas. Therefore, dentists graduating from this program cannot announce
that they are specialists, as recognized by the ADA.
Our program participates in both the PASS and the Match process. All candidates must
have officially graduated from a U.S. or Canadian School of Dentistry i.e. must have an official
transcript, before enrolling in the program. Holding a dental license in some state is highly
encouraged.
The MAHEC General Practice Residency program will provide the recent dental school
graduate an opportunity to enhance their skills in every specialty area in dentistry. Included
in both didactic and clinical format are implant placement and restoration, advanced cosmetic
dentistry with all porcelain crowns, bridges and veneers. Experience in removable prosthodontics
includes full and partial dentures some with semi-precision attachments, immediate and over
dentures to include pre-prosthetic surgery. Residents will also learn advanced techniques
in rotary endodontics, periodontal and oral surgery and some minor tooth movement as cases present.
Our outside rotations include IV and conscious sedation, family medicine, community
dentistry, and pediatric same-day hospital surgery. Our clinical program is designed to
meet individual strengths and areas of interest. Those doctors staying for a second year
will concentrate on their clinical areas of special interest.
Our residency is located in a new completely digitized 10 operatory dental health
center with state-of-the-art electronic records, computer work room, and a distance learning
teleconferencing center.
