Preceptor Development Program (PDP)
Welcome to the Faculty Developer Corner!
Providing faculty development to community-based teachers poses a
significant challenge for health professions schools. These materials
and techniques were designed to help overcome the many obstacles to
providing training and support for this unique and isolated faculty. In
producing the materials we have tried to make the content as practical
as possible and to use constructs that are familiar to clinicians (e.g.,
the SOAP format in the Difficult Learning Module).
Experience, the literature, and preceptor surveys have lead to a
collection of topics that include Giving Feedback, Evaluation, Teaching
Styles/Learning Styles, One Minute Preceptor. Because not all preceptors
wish to learn in the same way, we have produced these lessons in a
variety of formats to meet the learning needs and styles of as many as
preceptors as possible. The lessons are available both as on-line
sessions and in a downloadable format.
There are also two other types of materials available for your use:
thumbnails and seminars. The thumbnails are single page summaries of
the material, which might be helpful to leave with preceptors or to use
as teaching points during site visits. The seminars are available as
Power Point presentations including speaker’s notes. (Directions to
view speaker’s notes.) All materials can be found in the e-Learning
Tools section. Lastly, a video surveying techniques for
Evaluation and Assessment is also available. If you wish to receive a copy, please contact us at
PDP@mahec.net.
We encourage you to examine and adapt these materials for use with
your community preceptors. Is there a catch? No. We are happy to
share these materials with you and hope you find them helpful in your
preceptor development activities. Our only request is that you
acknowledge the source when PDP materials are presented or produced in
written form.
In addition, we would greatly appreciate hearing from you. What have
you found useful in your program? What didn’t work? Visit the
Developer
Discussions to see what others have said or submit your comments
in Talk Back with Dr. PDP. Other materials are available in the
Resources
and Links.
HRSA Family Medicine Training Grant (#1D15PE50119-01) supported
development and dissemination of these materials.
