Faculty Developer Discussions and Hints: What to do with the Unmotivated Preceptor?
All of us who are involved in preceptor development have a preceptor or
two that we just can’t seem to get interested in getting some
training. Even with top quality materials, CME credit, a nice meal, or
even a free weekend in a nice inn, you just can’t seem to interest
them. What strategies have you tried? Share your experiences (both
successful and unsuccessful) in
Talk Back with Dr. PDP.
Here are some suggestions from your colleagues
- Kelly Ward, DO, Michigan State University College of Osteopathic
Medicine.
Bring a "star" community preceptor in to talk of
experiences and how having students/residents will change and improve
potential preceptors' practices. Remember: adult learners are much
more motivated to learn what they perceive they NEED.
- John Langlois, MD, MAHEC Family Medicine Residency Facultybr>
One strategy to encourage preceptor development is to be prepared
to take advantage of a teachable moment. When the preceptor has a
question or is having a particular problem, they may be more open to
receiving some training. This may be a brief "thumbnail"
discussion or mailing a monograph after a phone call. This "just
in time" training may be better received and more useful to the
preceptor. Our preceptor development materials can help you to have
the tools at hand.
