Health Careers and Diversity Education (HCDE) Programs

photo The Health Careers Education Awareness Programs are designed to increase awareness of education opportunities that will heighten knowledge of health careers and workforce diversity in the region by providing practical information to assist in guiding students in making informed decisions about health careers. This initiative is also designed to build linkages with the K-12 education communities. To meet these goals, we start recruiting in the early stages of education.

The Minority Medical Mentoring Program (MMMP) is an internship for under-represented minority students who have an interest in practicing medicine. The program pairs minority high school students with physicians and dentists practicing in Buncombe County. MMMP is open to students who are participating in a school-sanctioned internship for course credit through the Asheville City or Buncombe County High School systems. Students experience a variety of healthcare disciplines during internship rotations, such as cardiology, internal medicine, emergency medicine, ophthalmology, palliative care, geriatrics, dentistry, public health, surgery and primary care.
