The following services are provided at no cost to members of the healthcare workforce in Western North Carolina in support of patient care, healthcare administration, publication, grant-writing, educational programs and other professional information needs:
Reference Services: Receive help locating the full-text of an article, assistance with searching databases, verifying bibliographic citations, and finding factual information.
Auto Alerts: Meet with a librarian to develop search strategy and save searches in databases to receive updates in current literature on a particular topic.
Literature Search: Reference librarians search appropriate databases for answers to your questions and needs in support of clinical services and healthcare administration. Results will include full citations and abstracts, when available. You can request a Literature Search online.
Borrowing Books, CDs and DVDs
All members of the healthcare workforce in Western North Carolina (working as or for a healthcare provider in WNC) are primary customers of MAHEC Library and Knowledge Services and thus eligible for borrowing privileges at no cost. You can search our library catalog to see books, DVDs and CDs you may borrow from our in-house collection at no charge. You can also search Worldcat to see materials in other libraries, and use our online form to request that we borrow items from other libraries for you. See our Membership & Fees chart for applicable fees for that service.
Books and audiovisuals are loaned for 3 week periods of time, with 2 renewals allowed if no hold has been placed on the items you have checked out.
After Hours Returns
Note: we no longer have a book drop for after-hours returns. You can arrange to drop items off at MAHEC's front lobby desk after hours by calling 257-4400. The lobby is usually staffed until 9pm Mon-Thurs but please call in advance to gain access to the campus.
Overdue fees, which are intended to encourage timely return of items, accrue at the rate of $.50 per day per item; if overdue fees total $10 or more, borrowing privileges are revoked until items are returned and fines are paid.
Loansome Doc
MAHEC faculty and staff, MAHEC Community Faculty, and UNC Preceptors of Health Affairs students – who receive articles at no cost, courtesy of MAHEC - are invited to use the Loansome Doc system to send article requests to MAHEC Library and Knowledge Services. All other library customers – please use our online form for requesting articles since payment is required at the time of the request.
