MAHEC offers AHA approved courses in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) for healthcare providers. Most courses are taught at the MAHEC Bridge Building in Asheville but if you’re interested in having us bring a course to your hospital or office, please contact the Training Site coordinator. We have access to a wide network of instructors and can offer instructor training courses on an as needed basis. PALS training will soon be part of our curriculum.

CME Category 1 credit is awarded for our ACLS course.


The goal of the BLS course is to improve the quality of care provided to the adult, child and infant victim of a cardiac and/or respiratory arrest, choking, or other cardiopulmonary emergency. Students will practice skills in simulated cases. Objectives:
  • Learn the importance of the chain of survival
  • Recognize a life threatening emergency
  • Demonstrate proficiency in 1 person and 2 person CPR
  • Utilize an AED when needed
  • Provide relief from choking in a safe and effective manner

The ACLS course is designed for medical professionals who either direct or participate in resuscitation of a patient. The goal of the course is to improve the quality of care provided to the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergency. Students will practice skills in simulated cases as both the team leader and team member.

Objectives:
  • Recognize and manage peri-arrest conditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicated resuscitation outcomes
  • Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS and integrating an AED
  • Manage cardiac arrest until the return of spontaneous circulation, transfer of care, or termination of care
  • Recognize and manage acute coronary syndromes
  • Recognize and manage acute stroke
  • Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team

Course Pre-requisites:
  • Be current and proficient in BLS using AHA guidelines
  • Able to read and interpret ACLS rhythms (normal sinus rhythm, bradycardia’s, tachycardia’s, heart blocks, ventricular rhythms, atrial rhythms, asystole)
  • Understand the essential ACLS medications
  • Be able to combine ACLS medications and EKG rhythms in an algorithm
  • Perform primary and secondary survey
  • Complete the pre-course assessment tests on the ACLS student CD and bring your certificate to class

The The ACLS Renewal Course is designed for healthcare providers who are proficient in providing ACLS and are able to complete a one day refresher course. ACLS Providers are prepared to either direct or participate in resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of the hospital. The goal of this one day refresher course is to improve the quality of care provided to the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergency. Students will practice the application of these and other skills in simulated cases and will practice both leader and team member roles.

    Course Pre-Requisites:
  • Current certification as an BLS Provider
  • Completion of the pre-course assessment tests on the ACLS Student CD (this should be brought to class)
    Healthcare providers who take the ACLS Renewal Course must be proficient in the following:
  • Performing BLS CPR skills using the 2005 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC
  • Able to read and interpret EKGs: Normal Sinus Rhythm, Sinus Bradycardia, Sinus Tachycardia, Supra Ventricular Tachycardia
  • (SVT), Ventricular Tachycardia, Asystole, Ventricular Fibrillation, Atrio-Ventricular Blocks (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Degree)
  • Understanding of the essential ACLS Drugs
  • Be able to combine EKG rhythm recognition and pharmacology
  • Performing the BLS Primary Survey and the ACLS Secondary Survey
    Course Completion Requirements:
  • Participate in, practice, and complete all learning stations
  • Pass the 1-rescuer CPR/AED testing station
  • Pass the Megacode testing station
  • Pass the closed-book written test with a minimum score of 84%
  • Students must attend all lessons of the course and pass all skills tests and the written test to receive a completion card and continuing education credit.

US Mail
We will mail the manual to you at no charge if we receive your registration payment at least two weeks before the course date.

Pick up
You can pick up your manual from our office at 501 Biltmore Avenue, Mon-Fri between 8am and 4pm. If we receive your registration payment less than two weeks before the course date you must pick up your manual or use the overnight shipping option below.

Overnight shipping
You can call our office at (828) 257-4468 and authorize us to ship the manual to you overnight for an additional fee of $12.
