Addiction impacts all ages, cultures, genders, and backgrounds, but
the impact of addiction on females is an increasing universal health
concern. National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) research shows men
and women require different prevention and treatment approaches
for addiction. Unfortunately, limited access to female specific service
still exists. Even with the amount of gender specific addiction research
increasing the Institute of Medicine reports a 17-year gap between the
publication of research results and its impact on treatment. The goals of
the 2010 ADDICTION: Focus on Women Conference are to respond to
the science to service gap, improve prevention, treatment and recovery
options for women with addiction and to champion the benefits of
gender specific services.
The 2010 Conference Theme: Emerging Trends in Treatment
Learning was emphasized and there were opportunities to relax and rejuvenate from the stresses of work.
The ADDICTION: Focus on Women Conference (AFOW), sponsored by MAHEC, began 24 years ago to
offer health and human service providers an educational opportunity focused on the clinical and
special needs of substance abusing women and their families. It is held in Western North
Carolina at Kanuga conference Center near Hendersonville, NC. The conference offers information
for ANY behavioral health provider (male or female) about women and addiction, the societal
and familial impact of substance abuse, and training on evidenced based models like Motivational
Interviewing, Seeking Safety or Helping Women Recover. AFOW offers participants a chance to
renew and learn with a variety of conference attendance options. Every attempt is made to keep
registration and lodging fees affordable. Scholarships are available and in 2010 there will
be special rates announced. Please join us at the AFOW conference where professionals connect
science to service and learn about current trends in treatment through Emerging Trends in Treatment.

Closing - Friday, May 14, 2010, 12:00pm-12:45pm
Emerging Rythyms
Presenter Mary Ferrick, MSW
We have so much to be grateful for and to close the ADDICTION: Focus on Women Conference (AFOW) participants are invited to come
and celebrate. Emerging from this week of learning is new knowledge, affirmation and intention for the future. In a collaborative creation
of music and fun this closing will include drumming and playing other instruments together as a group. Experience how your own
rhythm as well as the collective rhythm of the group emerges to create a new sense of community and encourage individual expression.
Instruments will be available or you can bring your own to play. While conference attendance gets you CEUs, attending the closing is...
PRICELESS.
Certificates available at the conclusion of the Closing Session, 12:45pm Friday.
