The Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is an accredited sponsor of Continuing Medical Education (CME) for physicians in the Western North Carolina region and the surrounding areas. MAHEC is accredited by the North Carolina Medical Society to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.

Through judicious use of resources, we strive to provide as broad a range of medical specialty credits as possible including AMA/PRA credit and AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians) credit to the physician constituency reflective of the distribution of medical specialties within the 16-county MAHEC region; View and download the AMA Physicians Recognition Award Booklet, 2006 Revisions.

Specifically, CME is provided throughout the region via hospital and medical society series activities. These are typically recurring (generally weekly or monthly) one to two-hour meetings of individual hospital medical staffs or medical associations in the region. Many of these conferences are available via live teleconference. In the Asheville area, MAHEC sponsors activities for the Mission Hospital medical staff, many of which are available throughout the region via live teleconference. Weekly activities include the Tuesday morning internal medicine conference, Wednesday combined Pediatric/ Family Practice grand rounds, Wednesday morning breast cancer conference, Thursday morning clinical cancer conference, and Thursday morning cardiology conference. In addition, there are bi-weekly trauma conferences at Mission Hospital sponsored by MAHEC, and monthly trauma mortality and morbidity meetings. CME activities are conducted at other hospitals in the region with similar frequency and follow similar clinical areas. Combined, these series CME events comprise more than 500 activities for area physicians each year. For a complete listing, please see CME series activities in MAHEC's continuing education calendar. For further information, please contact the department directly at (828) 257-4468 or by e-mail.
