The Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) Department of
Dental Education provides continuing education to dentists, dental
hygienists and dental assistants in the Western North Carolina region.
In the 1996-97 period, the department served more than seven-hundred
constituents through 15 courses, providing approximately fifty hours of
continuing dental education. Dental education faculty are provided
through the University of North
Carolina School of Dentistry at Chapel Hill, and participants at
these programs are assured of learning the latest techniques and
research to apply to their practices in the region.
Continuing education courses typically range from required
certification courses such as Basic Cardiac Life Support and OSHA
training to clinical courses specific to the practice of dentistry, such
as periodontal disease, oral surgery and management of medically
compromised dental patients. Some educational activities are specific to
dental team procedures and practice management. In addition, the
department provides some more extensive four- to six-week training for
certification in oral radiography (dental x-rays) as mandated by the
State of North Carolina and the North Carolina State Board of Dental
Examiners.
MAHEC is approved for credit by the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD)
and the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). For information on
courses being offered or to request being included in the department's
mailings, please call (828) 257-4490 or e-mail the department.
