Internet Point-of-Care (PoC) Learning CME

photo Internet Point of Care (PoC) Learning is a new CME initiative that awards physicians AMA Category 1 credit and AAFP prescribed credit for conducting structured, self directed online learning (internet information searches) on topics relevant to their clinical practice. Learning for this activity is driven by a reflective process in which physicians must document their clinical question, the sources consulted and the application to practice.

MAHEC is now an approved provider of Category 1 and AAFP prescribed credit for approved PoC Learning activities. MAHEC is collaborating with the eeds company to make the process of documenting PoC learning and the awarding of credit simple and easy. All that is required to participate in is a $35 membership with eeds. There are no other costs. To get CME credit for an internet search that is relevant to your clinical practice, you simply go onto the eeds website, choose MAHEC as your PoC credit provider and for each search, document your question, the evidence based database resource you used, and how you applied the information gained to your practice. You can count up to 20 hours (for 40 documented searches) of PoC credit per year towards relicensure. MAHEC librarians are available at no cost to assist you with database and search questions.

The AHEC Digital Library is your source for free and fee-based evidence-based information resources. The main difference between the AMA and AAFP process is that the AAFP requires use of one of the following approved on-line databases: Up-to-Date, InfoRetriever, ACP Pier, Dynamed and PEPID. MAHEC Librarians will be glad to assist you with accessing appropriate information sources.

With a paid subscription to the AHEC Digital Library you also have these resources at your fingertips:
  • Physicians' Information and Education Resource (PIER) – approved for AAFP credit
  • Licensed evidence-based databases such as MEDLINE
  • Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews including full-text Cochrane
  • and much, much more
