The MAHEC Department of Pharmacotherapy is primarily
involved with service and teaching. Each of the
Department's faculty has a clinical practice in patient
care areas, seeing patients while rounding on the healthcare
teams, making drug therapy (pharmacotherapy)
recommendations and monitoring patient outcomes. This
delivery of both service as well as education is one facet
of the Department differentiating it from the other
departments comprising the Regional Education Division.
Educational activities include instruction of pharmacy students,
pharmacy practitioners, pharmacy technicians and other healthcare
professionals. Pharmacy student experiential education is achieved
through clinical rotations at ambulatory and institutional sites in the
MAHEC region, where the students learn first-hand about the practice of
pharmacy in these areas. Approximately 180 student months of clinical
rotation are coordinated by the Department. Continuing Pharmacy
Education (CPE) programs are conducted by the Department for pharmacy
practitioners in the MAHEC region, consisting of small evening programs
as well as day-long symposiums. The Department faculty also interact
daily with physicians in the MAHEC Family Medicine Residency Program
through their individual clinical practices, educating these physicians
on optimal pharmacotherapy for their patients.
