directors. The CME department sponsors more than 600 hours of continuing medical education credits
annually, representing a broad spectrum of clinical topics and venues, from hospital-based grand rounds
activities to a variety of annual and special event conferences. Its mission is to facilitate,
enhance and support the overall MAHEC mission of improving the quality, distribution and retention
of health care professionals in Western North Carolina. Toward this end, the department provides
continuing medical education opportunities designed by and for physicians to improve the medical
practice environment and perpetuate high quality patient care. The primary geographic area of focus
is the 16-county MAHEC CME region. These include the counties of: Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Graham,

Specific program goals are:
- To provide CME activities and opportunities to physicians in our region, as conveniently and accessibly as feasible;
- To offer activities based in primary care and the major medical disciplines according to the needs assessment and available resources;
- To plan, develop and produce educational activities for constituent physicians within the MAHEC region and to do so with an awareness of increasing opportunities to work collaboratively with others;
- To plan, develop and produce a variety of CME activities varying from weekly morning conferences to single and multi-hour short courses to longer symposia, including the opportunity for mini-fellowships in specific areas, as requested by and tailored to constituents and their needs;
- Through judicious use of resources, to provide as broad a range of medical specialty credits as possible including AMA/PRA credit and AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians) credit to the physician constituency reflective of the distribution of medical specialties within the 16-county MAHEC region;

Specifically, CME is provided throughout the region via hospital and medical society series
activities. These are typically recurring (generally weekly or monthly) one to two-hour meetings
of individual hospital medical staffs or medical associations in the region. Many of these
conferences are available via live teleconference. In the Asheville area, MAHEC sponsors
activities for the Mission Hospitals medical
staffs, many of which are available throughout the region via live teleconference. Weekly
activities include the Tuesday morning internal medicine conference, Wednesday combined Pediatric/
Family Practice grand rounds, Wednesday morning breast cancer conference, Thursday morning
clinical cancer conference, and Thursday morning cardiology conference. In addition, there
are bi-weekly trauma conferences at Mission Hospitals sponsored by MAHEC, and monthly trauma
mortality and morbidity meetings. CME activities are conducted at other hospitals in the region with similar frequency and
follow similar clinical areas. Combined, these series CME events comprise more than 500
activities for area physicians each year. For a complete listing, please see
CME series activities in MAHEC's continuing education
calendar.
In addition, the department sponsors short courses and major medical symposia, working collaboratively with physician groups and others in the development of multi-disciplinary conferences.
MAHEC is accredited by the North Carolina Medical Society to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. For further information, please contact the department directly at (828) 257-4430 or by e-mail.
