Did you know? In NC, allied healthcare professionals make up over 35% of the healthcare workforce and include all healthcare professionals who work in collaboration with physicians, nurses and dentists. Because of the increased number of people moving to North Carolina and the aging population in North Carolina, demand for allied health professionals is predicted to grow.

Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) Allied Health Education Department:
  • Offers educational opportunities online, at MAHEC in Asheville, and by videoconference throughout the MAHEC service region
  • Serves the educational needs of allied healthcare providers in the 16-county MAHEC region
  • Engages educational faculty from the Department of Allied Health Sciences in the School of Medicine in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as local, state and national experts on various allied health topics
  • Provides basic /required educational training opportunities, advanced/ specific courses on requested "hot" topics in allied health and Interpreter training
  • Coordinates with other NC AHECs to offer special state-wide trainings for some disciplines
  • Is an approved provider and/or can offer discipline-specific credit for athletic trainers, diagnostic medical sonographers, dieticians, medical coders/health information technicians, laboratory scientists/technologists massage therapists, occupational therapists/assistants, physical therapists/assistants, radiologic technologists, respiratory care practitioners and speech-language pathologists
