This is an awesome conference. In light of the last few turbulent years, I am so grateful to have this conference to come to renew/ignite my passion.

Over the last two decades, research has provided critical insight about what works to prevent, treat, and sustain recovery for women and families impacted by addiction. Unfortunately, NIDA estimates it takes seventeen years for an effective research-based treatment intervention to become commonly used in substance abuse treatment. Since women were not often included in research prior to the 1990’s, the importance of disseminating current and proven treatment recommendations is imperative to the health and wellness of women and girls today and for decades to come.

At the 2012 conference, the content of each session offering up to 20 credit hours will clearly support the recommendations set forth by SAMHSA/CSAT to address the specific needs of women and the NEWLY RELEASED SAMHSA publication Addressing the Needs of Women and Girls. With leaders such as Dr. Norma Finkelstein championing the cause of gender and culturally responsive services, participants will:

1. Increase knowledge from a trauma-informed perspective and strengths-based treatment models
2. Identify the importance and role of socioeconomic issues and differences, relationships, and caregiver roles among women
3. Promote cultural competence specific to women that recognizes roles and gender expectations across cultures that affect societal attitudes toward women who abuse substances
4. Address women’s unique health concerns using a developmental perspective
5. Understand the importance of an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to women’s treatment that maintains a gender-responsive treatment environment across settings .

Conference Location

Located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, the Kanuga Conference Center provides an idyllic setting for the 25th Annual ADDICTION: Focus on Women Conference. Situated on more than 300 acres of pristine wooded land, Kanuga is characterized by the serenity of a mountain lake, hiking trails, and space to relax and renew. Kanuga is a short 10-minute drive from Hendersonville, NC.

SHE Recovers: Praise Poetry with Glenis Redmond

Praise Poetry is celebrated in West Africa requiring the poet to create verse that honors his/her place in nature. During this talk, Glenis Redmond, a former Addictions Counselor, will discuss how Praise Poetry acted as a healer in her life allowing for a creative reckoning. The word praise in some West African tongues translates into the English word 'tendon,' suggesting the poet must flex their emotional and spiritual muscle to poetically work through their own internal and external landscapes.

In Praise Poetry each line is a celebratory declaration, an invocation that acts as a cathartic affirmation as the poet places him/herself on the continuum of their ancestry. The poem generally begins with an invocation of I AM and then extends to the collective. Glenis' Praise Poetry keynote is an invitation for participants to enter into the healing circle of poetry.

MAHEC designates this continuing education activity as meeting the criteria for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) as established by the National Task Force on the Continuing Education Unit. 2.0 CEUs of continuing education credit will be offered. You must attend the entire conference classes to receive CEUs. CEUs are accepted by the North Carolina Social Work Certification and Licensure Work.

Kanuga Conference Center: Lodging Accommodations

All participants who elect to stay overnight at Kanuga will be housed at the Kanuga Conference Center in the cottages, guest houses, or at the Lake Inn. Kanuga Conference Center is situated on 1400 mountain acres. Easy access to hiking, biking and the lake allows for recreation. Please bring comfortable shoes, layers and rain gear.

The Inn is a hotel with key entry doors. Rooms are not equipped with telephones or televisions. Pay phones and wireless internet access are available in the Kanuga Lake Inn Lobby. The cabins and guest houses are designed to help guests connect with the outdoors and travel back to a simpler time. There are no locks on the exterior doors. Cottages and guest houses have mini kitchens with refrigerators. For guests who are still finding their comfort zone with the open and “low-tech” experience, we highly encourage early registration and lodging in the Inn. Directions

Take I-26 at US 64W and exit at 64W into Hendersonville. Continue for 2.3 miles. Turn left on South Business 25 (Church Street) and drive 9 blocks. Turn right on Kanuga Street and continue for 3.75 miles. Watch for the brown Kanuga Conference sign and turn right on Kanuga Lake Road. The main entrance is 1.5 miles from the sign on the right. Registration is in the Kanuga Lake Inn.

Air Transportation

Hendersonville is served by the Asheville Regional Airport (10 miles) and Greenville Spartanburg International Airport (30 miles). Child Care

Participants will need to make their own arrangements for child care. Please contact the Hendersonville Chamber of Commerce at (828) 692-1413 for possible resources. Please remember, sessions are not appropriate for children.

Most cell phones have reception at Kanuga. However, phone service varies by carrier so participants are encouraged to check the coverage area prior to the conference.

Registration for the 26th Annual ADDICTION: Focus on Women Conference involves a two-step process. First, your registration must be received by MAHEC Registration by April 30, 2012, using the conference registration form or online registration. Registrations are not valid unless accompanied by payment OR a signed approval form from your supervisor indicating that payment will be forthcoming from the agency of your employment. If registering online, the supervisors’s name, phone number, and email must be included. Without supervisory approval, you will be responsible for the registration fee. Second, all participants must verify the registration process at check-in upon arrival at the Kanuga Lake Inn.

Refund requests minus a $50 administrative fee will be honored if received in writing in our offi ce by May 1, 2012. If you do not cancel within the allowed time and you do not attend the conference, you will be invoiced for the entire conference fee. You may send a substitute. COMPREHENSIVE FULL WEEK CONFERENCE:

The comprehensive tuition for full-time participants includes all food beginning with dinner on Tuesday through breakfast on Friday, lodging and conference events beginning with a Pre-Conference session on Tuesday through closing on Friday. Also covered are educational materials and use of recreational facilities. Lunch on Friday is not included.

COMMUTER FULL WEEK:

The commuter tuition for full week conference participants includes all events beginning with a Pre-Conference session on Tuesday through closing on Friday. Lunch on Wednesday and Thursday are included, however, breakfast and dinner are not. Monday night lodging is available for $69 and includes Monday dinner through Tuesday lunch. Check-in time for Monday night lodging is 4:00 pm.
